How To Buy A Boxer Puppy
By Jason Rusch
One of the most important considerations is where to buy your Boxer puppy. Unfortunately the popularity of the Boxer has increased the number of people that are involved in breeding, many which really don't understand the importance of selective breeding or the possible dangers of breeding without knowing the different lines and traits of the lines.
There are at least three different options for buying a purebred Boxer puppy or dog and they include reputable breeders, backyard breeders and pet stores. Of the three options, the only one recommended is the first option, buying from a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder is someone that is knowledgeable about the breed, works to enhance the breed, and is genuinely concerned about the puppies and dogs within his or her care. Not all breeders and kennels are involved in show or competitions, but most are. Not all breeders registered with the Kennel Club in your area are necessarily reputable, but it is a strong indication that these are concerned breeders and are a great place to start your search.
The second option is a backyard breeder. Backyard breeders are usually private individuals that own a purebred Boxer or other breed of dog and routinely breed him or her for profit. A backyard breeder is not usually involved in showing or competing with their dog and is merely selling puppies that can be called purebreds. Although the backyard breeder may be loving and caring of their dog, they typically are not involved in the show ring and may be unaware of what is show quality and what is not. It is very important to keep in mind that all purebred Boxers will not be show quality. Any Boxers with coloring other than fawn or brindle, or Boxers with too much white or all white coats, incorrect jaw formations and bites as well as temperament problems or conformation problems are not eligible for show competitions.
Backyard breeders typically do not offer any type of health guarantee nor do they guarantee the Boxer will be show quality. Often the advertisements in local papers, on the internet and in community bulletins are from backyard breeders.
The final and least desirable option is buying from a pet store. Most puppies from pet stores are bred and raised in puppy mills or puppy farms, huge dog breeding facilities where producing as many puppies as possible without regard to the health or well being of the puppies or adult dogs is the sole goal. These puppy mills are outlawed in most countries, but the individuals that run them continue to profit from the sale of dogs.
The puppies are purebred and registered, but there is absolutely no consideration in breeding programs and often the adults are very poorly conformed and typically puppies will not be of show quality. In addition puppies from pet store and therefore puppy mills will often be diseased and have significant hereditary health problems that may not develop until later in life. Reputable breeders are ethically opposed to selling to pet stores since there is no control for the breeder about the type of person that will purchase the puppy.
